Operations

An Operations career at Barclays Capital will take you straight to the very heart of modern investment banking. You’ll be part of a highly skilled team that works alongside all areas of our complex, fast-moving business. At every step, you’ll be redefining processes, challenging the status quo, finding synergies across the business and improving the performance of people and technology.

Operations is involved in the full spectrum of financial products, from bonds and equity derivatives to swaps and options, and partners almost every group in the firm. Our teams support the lifecycle of the trade, from trade capture, client confirmation and risk management to settlement, margin, and effective collateral and cash management. Technological progress, in areas such as e-commerce, and globalisation mean that Operations is continually evolving.

As an Operations graduate, you’ll gain broad-ranging, in-depth understanding of both established and emerging markets within investment banking, leading to exceptional career development opportunities. After five weeks’ initial training, you’ll follow our Continuous Professional Education programme. This includes product knowledge sessions, online tutorials and our mentor programme, giving you a broad overview of investment banking, our business and our products.

After your initial training, you’ll take nine to 12-month rotations in two Operations areas before a final placement in a group. As you progress, you’ll be given responsibility for new projects and initiatives, and either become an expert in one product or take on a generalist role. Our projects, day-to-day tasks and responsibilities have three constant themes: client service, scalability, and control – client service because clients expect superior service every time; scalability because we constantly need to evolve the processes and technology we use to improve our efficiency and our ability to grow and support the firm; and control because Operations plays a key role in implementing regulatory, risk, audit and other processes. Working with colleagues across the firm, you may be involved in a number of initiatives from working with business heads to improve controls and efficiency, to onboarding new products.

We’re looking for highly skilled, bright graduates who bring a fresh perspective to the table and a willingness to challenge existing practices. You’ll need a real talent for analysis, but also a flair for creative thinking. In return, we’ll provide a platform for you to challenge the way we do things while encouraging your development.
