Further Opportunities

Along with careers in financial and risk management services, there are equally challenging opportunities in fields you might not usually associate with an investment bank:

Compliance

As a world-leading investment bank, we’re proud of our well-deserved reputation. It will therefore come as no surprise that evaluating and managing the regulatory and operational risks we encounter is one of our top priorities.

Compliance provides expert advice to the business that enables us to navigate swiftly and confidently through a myriad of multi-jurisdictional laws and regulations that govern our industry. The function works closely with our business leaders to help them fulfil our regulatory supervisory responsibilities. Our Compliance team is also viewed as a leader in the industry as we work closely with regulators and our business peers to drive improvements in regulatory and industry standards.

Pursuing a career in Compliance offers an exceptional opportunity to build a thorough understanding of Barclays Capital and investment banking. We will actively help you develop as a professional, as far and as fast as your abilities allow. If you are a team player who can proactively investigate and resolve problems – and also have the confidence to state your position – you have what it takes to build a successful career with us.

Corporate Communications

Our Corporate Communications team is responsible for protecting and enhancing our well-respected reputation and public image. Corporate Communications is considered a trusted and valued advisor within Barclays Capital.

To ensure its success in every area of communications, Corporate Communications is split into four main teams:

Advertising and Brand ensures that the Barclays Capital brand remains relevant and stands out in a crowded marketplace. We are responsible for developing advertising, creative and media strategies with our agency partners, and work with all businesses throughout the firm to ensure that our visual brand identity is applied consistently in order to achieve maximum recognition and value.

Internal Communications informs and inspires our people to turn strategy into action, sharing views across Barclays Capital and the wider Barclays Group. This includes developing appropriate and effective channels for communications such as the intranet, presentations, newsletters, posters and display stand material.

Government Relations manages the Barclays Capital position and provides advice on a range of public policy issues. The team is the central point of contact for Barclays Capital policy interaction with Governments, Parliamentarians, civil servants and trade associations, and advises the firm’s global senior management on the potential impact of legislation and public policy.

Media Relations is responsible for protecting and enhancing the reputation of Barclays Capital in the media. This includes acting as a spokesperson for the bank; writing and distributing press releases; organising interviews and press conferences; preparing awards submissions; and providing strategic PR planning and advice for the businesses.

If you're looking for a career in financial communications or financial PR, a position here will provide you with an excellent opportunity. On our graduate programme, you’ll gain knowledge of all the disciplines within Corporate Communications while also being exposed to many business areas. You’ll be expected to make a real contribution to the team, working on your own projects under the mentorship of senior, highly-experienced communications professionals.

You'll need to be a good communicator with a passion for financial services and a keen interest in macro economic and political issues. In addition, you will need to be well organised with excellent interpersonal skills, able to work under tight deadlines and think quickly under pressure.

Events and Roadshow Marketing

Our Global Events, Roadshows and Sponsorships division is responsible for creative events, programmes and promotional materials – ensuring adherence with our brand values and the highest levels of quality, efficiency and cost control.

Day-to-day work is challenging and highly varied, covering everything from client and internal conferences, functions, corporate memberships, purchased tickets and hospitality packages to roadshows and presentations. From the very start, you'll learn how to plan an event or conference from conception through to delivery. This allows you to research and build a working knowledge of venues for the various events and conferences we organise. You’ll also gain a thorough insight into investment banking.

It’s a great place for graduates to build a career in events management. Confident and keen to learn, you’ll need a genuine interest in our firm, market and clients. You’ll also be able to remain calm, patient and flexible under pressure whilst juggling several projects simultaneously in our fast-paced environment.

Human Resources

Our recent growth and incredible success is a direct result of the quality of our people – and that's where HR comes in. Its role is to attract, develop, and retain top talent, strengthen our “One Firm” culture and share HR best practice globally.

HR is split into teams:

Client Relationship Teams (CRTs) are responsible for overall service delivery, ensuring business support at every level. They act as relationship managers, originating HR activity and offering – for example – performance management advice.

Centres of Excellence provide specific areas of expertise and project management ranging from recruitment through to graduate development. Some groups include compensation, diversity and inclusion, employee relations, learning and development and performance management.

A role in HR requires empathy, impartiality, resilience and creative thinking, together with a commercial and analytical mind plus excellent communication and organisational skills. In return, you can look forward to rotating through a number of CRTs and Centres of Excellence before deciding where to settle, along with the opportunity to gain relevant professional qualifications.

Legal

We recruit trainees / graduates into the legal division in the US only

The legal function is a group of experienced lawyers and documentation experts who provide counsel exclusively to the bank to manage legal risk and maximise revenue. Over 430 employees in teams in London, New York, Houston, Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo:

  • Advise on relevant laws and regulations
  • Evaluate and analyse the legal risks of new products and structures
  • Engage and supervise external counsel, when appropriate
  • Develop and implement risk mitigation policies
  • Manage disputes and litigation

As a legal analyst, you’ll directly support our in-house counsel, working through at least four rotations in different practice and business areas to gain cross-departmental exposure. We will also provide you with the necessary training through a continuing education programme consisting of networking opportunities, product training and professional development classes. You’ll be assigned a mentor and other HR professionals who will help you to meet your career goals.

We need people who are thoughtful, attentive to detail, resourceful and enthusiastic. You also need to have strong technical, analytical and communications skills. An interest in law and the legal profession is a given.

Strategic Planning

Strategic Planning is a small team that acts as an internal consultancy and impartial partner to the firm's senior management.

Strategic plans are vital to accomplishing our mission to become the premier global investment bank, so its work carries a high level of visibility. Projects can range from deciding whether to enter a new business line to re-designing the processes in an existing business. The team also interfaces with Barclays Group on issues that require wider co-ordination.

A typical day in Strategic Planning will revolve around five activities:

  • Staying informed – keeping up with the latest news and commentary on the industry and specific areas of current project focus
  • Meeting internal clients – discussing analyses and preliminary recommendations with the business owners, or collecting viewpoints from other relevant business areas
  • Researching and analysing – gathering internal and external data to drive the current project's analysis forward towards a recommendation
  • Reviewing work and sharing knowledge – engaging the rest of the team in brainstorming sessions and feedback on current project progress
  • Preparing written communication – helping the business owner express the recommendations to a wider audience (e.g. own staff, Executive Committee)

In line with this broad remit, the background of the team ranges from blue-chip consultants to former investment bankers – all united by a passion for problem solving and all with highly numerate minds.
