Training and Development

Initial Training Programs (ITPs)

Our Initial Training Programs (ITPs) are unique to each business. You’ll complete your ITP, and all related exams, with peers from your respective division. Lasting five to seven weeks, these training sessions offer a foundation in business fundamentals, intensive technical and product skills, professional development and role-specific skills. Courses are taught by both Barclays Capital experts and third-party consultants. The program will allow you to interact and build relationships with peers from other regional offices that will last throughout your career with us.

Held at our New York City headquarters and our training facility in Jersey City, NJ, our ITPs:

  • Provide an overview of Barclays Capital’s products and businesses
  • Develop an understanding of the role of an Analyst or Associate and the nature of an Investment Banking career
  • Enhance finance/technical skills essential to your role
  • Introduce Barclays Capital’s specific technologies and internal processes
  • Promote social interaction and networking across the class and business
  • Offer the opportunity to participate in philanthropy events

Continuing Professional Education (CPE)

The Continuing Professional Education (CPE) curriculum is tailored to each business and typically begins a few months after your completion of the ITP. This training has been developed to build upon learning that you received during the ITP. The intention is to further sharpen your knowledge of the bank and its functions as well as the skills that will enhance your professional presence at the firm.

A word about CPE from Jerry del Missier, Chief Executive Officer:

"Barclays Capital invests substantially in developing the new talent that has joined our organization... We strongly encourage you to make the most of this unique opportunity to develop yourselves. Both myself and some of the other sponsors of the program personally take a keen interest in those graduates who do well in this program."

Objectives of CPE

  • To build a broad understanding of the organization, its businesses, products and clients
  • To continue to educate Analysts and Associates on targeted technical and interpersonal skills relevant to their career success
  • To provide continuing networking opportunities with peers in the Analyst and Associate class across the business

The program includes:

  • Classroom-based training in business and product knowledge as well as courses geared towards your professional development
  • A chance to learn from experienced trainers and practitioners

Career Development

Continual career progression and growth are achieved through ongoing performance feedback and training, mentor programs and networks, and mobility opportunities. Let's look at those in more detail:

1. Ongoing Performance Feedback and Training

We believe that the best way to improve performance continually is through feedback and coaching – from the people you work with most closely.

Our performance review process and tools are designed to help you manage your career and meet your career aspirations. They provide a framework within which you can discuss all aspects of your performance openly and honestly, as well as understand how you’re doing compared with expectations.

We'll also provide you with a wide range of training opportunities, both classroom and online.

L@B (Learning At Barclays Capital) is a web-based Learning Management System for scheduling, launching and managing all instructor-led and online training offered to Barclays Capital employees. You can launch and manage courses that are pre-selected by Human Resources, Compliance or your Business Area via “Your assigned training”.

2. Mentor Programs

As a new recruit, you’ll benefit from our various mentoring programs. These programs align you with a mentor in your division, who will help you integrate quickly into the firm and get to know our structure, values and expectations.

3. Employee Network Groups

To help build a culture of inclusion, as well as attract, retain and develop a diverse workforce, we have several Employee Network Groups. These groups are open to all employees who wish to participate and are recognized by the firm for their support in accomplishing our goals of increasing our diversity representation and creating a culture of inclusion. They support business and diversity goals through their focus on raising awareness, providing networking and professional development opportunities to their membership, and partnering with external organizations on community outreach initiatives. Networks are sponsored by senior managers across the business. To learn more about our networks, please visit our diversity page.

4. Mobility

We give our employees every opportunity to flourish and prosper within the firm, and our policy of encouraging people to seek career growth and challenges internally has been designed to support, promote and proactively manage a long-term career at Barclays Capital. As mobility opportunities play a role in career paths, upon completion of your program the firm is supportive of internal mobility opportunities across both businesses and geographies.
